Abba claimed never to have heard of the famous group until he was besieged by all his humorous callers! During the first half of the year, much of ABBA's time had been spent in the recording studio preparing material for the next album, which was due for release before the end of the year, but on June 18th, 1976, the group took a day off for a special reason. They were to perform a tribute to Silvia Sommerlath, a very important Swedish lady indeed, at a gala held on the day before her marriage to Sweden's King, Carl Gustaf.
As Benny remarked in 1979, "Why should we bother to still record in Swedish? " One other thing - even at this early stage of their international career,Björn and Benny took care to credit the musicians who had helped them to create the unique ABBA sound. Surprisingly, the majority of the 'Waterloo' album was made with a nucleus of only five musicians - Benny on various keyboard instruments, Björn on acoustic guitar, Janne Schaffer on electric guitar, Rutger Gunnarsson on bass and Ola Brunkert on drums.
